Online Master Course
This online course includes three videos in French intended for students enrolled in a Research Master Program. It introduces the concept of coding in linguistics research, and provides basic tools for transcribing and annotating speech as well as visual-gestural features in video recordings with the software ELAN.
1/3 Introduction to the software ELAN
The first video introduces basic features of ELAN for transcription and annotation purposes. It explains how to create tiers for participants and transcribe speech in a video recording with the transcription mode by breaking speech into smaller annotations.
2/3 Introduction to the annotation grid
This second video provides basic tools for the creation of a coding grid in linguistics research. It explains the differences between raw and categorized data, and shows how an annotation grid can be created on Excel with different category names and codes.
3/3 How to annotate with ELAN
The final video shows how to directly annotate a video on ELAN with the creation of a template, which includes tiers, linguistic types, and controlled vocabulary. It provides a step-by-step procedure to follow in order to successfully create dependent and independent tiers with assigned codes.
